Men Need Help Too – Focusing on Men’s Mental Health

Good mental health is essential for a good life. The fast-paced lifestyle of today has caused many people to develop mental health issues. Both men and women are faced with such challenges every day. However, why does men’s mental health often get neglected?

According to mental health statistics, men are more likely to have mental health issues and not seek professional help for it. They are also more likely to be involved in alcohol or drug abuse and commit suicide. These facts are alarming. There is clearly a need for men’s mental health awareness around the world.

Men are often considered as the “stronger” gender. They are expected to “be strong” and “man up” if they are facing any difficulty. Being emotionally vulnerable or communicating about their feelings is not something that “normal men” do. This element of toxic masculinity in our society is one of the reasons why men’s mental health issues are often pushed to the background.

Men have become used to bottling things up. If they are facing mental health issues, they do not want to disclose them. After all, it can be considered as a sign of weakness. However, this mindset is very dangerous. The expectations that men are required to meet are very toxic. Some of the most common challenges they face are work-related and financial pressures.

Job security, work problems, failing personal relationships, or any significant life-altering event can impact mental health. These factors may lead to mental health issues like stress, anxiety, and depression. Such issues are serious conditions that can significantly affect men’s health as well. It influences their daily lives, their ability to be productive, and maintain personal relationships. The most important thing to understand is that these issues are not signs of weaknesses. They can happen to anyone and should not be ignored.

Men must seek proper medical help and get an accurate diagnosis. Most people need professional treatment to feel better. Otherwise, mental health issues can lead to severe consequences. Men who do not go to a therapist or a counsellor may feel overwhelmed. They might try to deal with their problems in harmful ways like self-medication with drugs or alcohol. In extreme cases, this can even lead to suicide.

The good news is that most of the men’s mental health issues can be easily treated. The key is to call for help as soon as possible. Talking with a friend or family member can be the first step. Changing the communication style or the environment is found to be very beneficial for men who are struggling to talk. However, if more specific help is needed, then the best option is to revert to a professional.

Our society requires that we look beyond the traditional ways in which support is given. The mental health profession needs new and innovative ideas to provide with mental health support for men.
