ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition effecting a persons attention and increasing hyperactive and impulsive behaviours
As of 2023, one in twenty Australians suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Symptoms manifest themselves in various ways, the most common include (but are not limited to) poor time management, impulsiveness, disorganization and difficulty sustaining attention. If left untreated, ADHD in adults can cause grave issues in one's career and personal life.

Adults with untreated or undiagnosed ADHD face pivotal problems like mood disorders, anxiety and impulsiveness. Even if the above problems were treated, the underlying problem would lead to more problems if left undiagnosed.

Unfortunately, ADHD symptoms are not a one-size-fits-all and it is crucial to get diagnosed to meet the happiest, healthiest and highest functioning version of yourself. Getting the right diagnosis saves lives.

Treatment for Adults & Adolescents with ADHD
Cognitive behavioural interventions have been found to lead to significant positive outcomes for adolescents and adults diagnosed with ADHD - with or without medication. Treatments are tailored to the specific needs of individuals with ADHD. Treatment focuses on individual strengths, values and interests balanced with a focus on addressing challenges of the highest priority to the individual.
A minimum of 5 sessions is beneficial and should include:
-
education about ADHD, how it impacts the brain, cognitive processing and resulting challenges
-
Address environmental and behavioural factors - to optimise strengths and minimise challenges (strategies should be practised collaboratively in session)
-
Individual strategies for self-care, self-advocacy, and working with challenges
-
Psychological adjustment and cognitive restructuring
-
Information about ongoing supports and resources (establishing initial contacts/follow-up appointments where appropriate)

The number of sessions will vary depending on the severity of the impacts, and intervention may be needed much longer. Individuals may need to spend more time on a particular aspect of treatment/skill development. Discuss the treatment plan recommended for you.
