Comprehensive Pain and Chronic Disease Management Program

Program Aim(s)

  • to reduce and manage pain and to teach clients beneficial life skills.
  • to assist clients to take necessary steps to treat and control pain and / or increasing self-efficacy to help the client live a fuller life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been clinically proven to assist in pain management and associated conditions like depression and anxiety.

Goals of the Comprehensive Pain and Chronic Disease Management Program

  • To provide education on chronic pain and disability management
  • To increase client’s activity level and help clients to be active even in the context of chronic pain
  • To improve client’s emotional functioning
  • To improve  client’s fitness level (if appropriate)

Pain management programs often include behavioural goal setting aspects with participants setting weekly targets to work towards between the sessions each week. As part of a multi-disciplinary pain treatment team, CBT may include exercise goals set by a physical therapist or recommendations made by an anaesthesiologist e.g. taking pain medications at prescribed time intervals.

CBT for pain management is tailored to the individual needs of the client. Our program will include:

  • Cognitive Restructuring
  • Relaxation Training / Breathing
  • Stress and Pain Management (including medications if appropriate)
  • Anger Management
  • Improved sleep quality behaviours
  • Reaching your goals - e.g. Activity Pacing
